On March 4, 2025, the ERO Enterprise Women’s Leadership Conference brought together more than 550 individuals from the electric utility industry for a dynamic virtual event filled with inspiration and empowerment. This year’s conference showcased an exceptional lineup of women leaders who shared their personal stories, insights, and strategies for embracing authenticity in the workplace.
The conference (which will be accessible soon via https://www.mro.net/event/ero-enterprise-womens-leadership-conference/), provided a platform for all individuals in the industry to connect, share experiences, and learn practical strategies for professional growth.
Dr. Rosie Ward opened the conference with practical advice on recognizing and reshaping the limiting narratives many women tell themselves, which can hinder their success. Her session encouraged participants to challenge these self-imposed barriers and foster a more positive mindset.
Dr. Jennifer Hesterman captivated the audience with her unique perspective from her military career and expertise in security. She emphasized the importance of valuing one’s experience and contributions, empowering participants to appreciate the expertise they bring to their respective fields.
There were two panel presentations, the first highlighted progress women have made in the electricity industry since the Federal Power Act was passed two decades ago in 2005. The panel was moderated by MRO President and CEO Sara Patrick. Panelists included: Melanie Frye, President and CEO of the Western Electricity Coordinating Council; Sonia Rocha, Sr. Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for the North American Electric Reliability Corporation; and Teresa Mogensen, President and CEO of American Transmission Company. These impressive female leaders discussed their own career journeys, reflecting on the importance of mentorship, building strong networks, and self-advocacy. Each provided their perspectives on creating inclusive workplaces where all individuals can thrive.
The second panel explored the topic of harmonizing work and life responsibilities in a face-paced and demanding industry. The panel was moderated by MRO board member and Great River Energy’s Sr. Vice President of Transmission Planning, Priti Patel. Panelists included: Erin Quigley, Manager of Registration & Certification at Texas Reliability Entity; Maggie Peacock, Manager of Analytics and Data Management at SERC Reliability Corporation; and Nikki Schaefer, Vice President and General Counsel at ReliabilityFirst. Panelists discussed a variety of challenges related to balancing professional and personal responsibilities, and offered practical tips for setting boundaries, practicing self-care, prioritizing one’s own health and wellbeing, and building a community of support.
The conference was expertly emceed by MRO Board Chair Dr. Dana Born, whose insightful commentary and wisdom guided attendees through the day’s agenda. Her presence added an immeasurable layer of depth and understanding to the discussions and ensured an engaging experience for all.
The ERO Enterprise Women’s Leadership Conference served as a powerful reminder of the importance of fostering a supportive and empowering environment for individual leadership. The insights and connections gained will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the professional journeys of all who participated.
In the words of MRO President and CEO Sara Patrick, our future is indeed, very bright!
